I’ve always enjoyed art, with an art teacher for a mother and a father who was always making things, it seemed inevitable that I would probably end up doing one or the other. Turns out I’ve managed to make both into a career.
After studying Theatre Design at Nottingham Trent University,I spent the next few years making props and creating sets for the York Dungeon. From the macabre to the humorous,I spent my days covered in fake blood and cobweb! It gave me the experience I needed and I left the Dungeon and joined an international theming company.I travelled from Hong Kong to Grimsby and beyond…I got inspired by my travels and when I became freelance, the extra time I had was spent painting. I especially enjoyed my time in Hong Kong the scenes which I saw lent themselves perfectly to my style. Hustle and bustle mixed with bright colours the only thing I can’t paint are the smells!
Inspiration comes from many places. Sometimes it's from the Scottish artist’s town of Kirkcudbright where my parents now live. This community is awash with artists of all kinds and it’s difficult not to be inspired when you walk around the pretty coloured houses and amongst the fishing boats in the harbour.
The coast is another love from the beaches of North Wales to the Victorian splendour of England’s piers, it is a world away from my city centre home in York. Being here is also a source of many of my pictures.
I usually sketch out my subjects in pencil, then go over the lines with scratchy pen work. Finally I fill in with a mix of inks and watercolours. I have been experimenting with mixed media and acrylics my style is continually evolving. I draw what I see, but I don’t go in for photographic style studies that’s what cameras are for! I like to highlight details that might not always be noticed when you look at some of my pictures, it takes several viewings before you notice all the details.
I’ve recently exhibited in my own home as part of York Open Studios this was a great success, not only in terms of sales, but also in terms of future opportunities. I’ve got three very different upcoming exhibitions and am painting in every spare minute to keep up! As time goes on, my time is becoming more and more dedicated to painting I think I’ll need a bigger house soon to cope with all my pictures! For now I’ll have to make do with my attic studio.
